The women's Gold Medal winner of the Washington State Senior Games
Soccer Tournament is Northwest FC, Mari Hayashi, Captain.
Northwest FC, from Seattle, Des Moines, Kent, Eastside, Lynnwood,
and Bremerton, is a team that formed to play in the Veteran's Cup
in Hawaii and stayed together afterwards. Not all the players could
make it to the Senior Games Tournament, so a few others were added,
obviously good choices! The goals that were scored, in the three games
that were played, were by Sally Raftery, Val Gilstrap, Julie Cecil, and Sue Pruitt.
- The Silver Medal went to Cope Brothers, Chris Cope, captain.
Cope Brothers comes from Pierce County but also includes players from other areas.
Goals were scored by Carolyn Day, Margaret Steebs, and Rita Oster.
-
Bronze Medals were awarded to Tradewinds, captained by Joyce Trader,
and generally from the Seattle area. Goals were scored by Holly McCracken (from Olympia) and Joan Horn.
- The Olympia Women's Team, captained by Tracy Osterhout, came in fourth,
with their single goal scored by Janis Martin. However, their goalie, Helen Nelson, is
credited with keeping the Oly team in every game!
- The Men's Tournament consisted of a single game for the Gold, between the Liga Hispana,
captained by Juan Ceballos, and the Olympia United, co-captained by Nick Althauser and George Gunderson.
The game ended in a 2 to 2 tie, with goals scored by Scott Bishop and Ray Huntley for the Olympia men and
Ricardo and Romulo Maldonado for Liga Hispana. A five shot shoot-out ended in a 3 to 2 win for Liga Hispana,
who were happy to win the Gold for a second year in a row!
